scope of work

UDC was appointed as the full-service consultant for a series of improvement projects at Clayton Health Centre. these works focused on enhancing accessibility, modernising essential facilities and ensuring compliance with statutory regulations. key upgrades included automating the entrance door, installing an access control system and replacing the main entrance door to improve accessibility. throughout the building, the electrics and radiators were upgraded and the public toilet was fully refurbished. additional works included drainage repairs, upgrades to the reception area with new flooring, decoration and improved lighting, as well as the installation of a boiler management system (BMS) and kitchen refurbishment.

challenges faced

before these upgrades, the building had a distinctly dated 1970s design, with features such as carpeted flooring and dim lighting, which made the space feel dark and unwelcoming. accessibility was a significant issue, particularly as the main entrance was only accessible via steps. this was an unnecessary barrier that reflected outdated design standards from the time of construction.

one of the main challenges was creating an accessible entrance within the constraints of the building’s existing layout. to address this, a former rear fire escape was repurposed into a new accessible entrance. however, as this entrance was not visible from reception, an intercom and automated door entry system were introduced to ensure secure and efficient access.

compliance with accessibility regulations was the primary driver behind these projects. reports had highlighted various non-compliant aspects of the building, making accessibility improvements the top priority.

outcome

despite working within the constraints of an ageing building and a limited budget, the projects delivered significant improvements. the upgrades have made the health centre more accessible and user-friendly, ensuring that all visitors and staff can navigate and use the facilities with greater ease. while the focus was on compliance rather than aesthetics, the modernisation of key areas has resulted in a far more functional and inclusive environment.
